Why Most Store-Bought Candles Are Bad For You

Seth Lemon for Citrus Candle Company

If you’ve ever bought a candle from a retail chain, chances are you were breathing in toxic chemicals every time you burned it. The majority of commercially-made candles are manufactured using chemicals that are harmful to your body.

Phthalates are a group of chemicals that can damage the liver, kidneys, and lungs, and are known to be endocrine disruptors. Many of these usually inexpensive candles also contain paraffin, a wax made from petroleum that when burned emits chemicals with reported harmful effects to humans. These candles are by-products of oil refineries.

At Citrus Candle Company, our candles are by-products of vegetables. Made from organic, renewable, and biodegradable soy without using chemicals, we handcraft and hand-pour each candle in Los Angeles. Founded by Seth Lemon, an HBCU grad, this Black-owned business was birthed with mental wellness in mind.

“From my personal battle with anxiety and depression to the friends I miss dearly who died by suicide, life comes at us in all directions. When life gives you lemons, it's important to be self-aware and prioritize mental health wellness,” said Lemon. “Having that conversation with others—particularly in the Black community—however, has not always been easy. I created Citrus Candle Company with that mission in mind, sparking this important conversation while helping you along your self-care journey.”

There are scientifically proven benefits to aromatherapy. Lavender helps reduce stress and anxiety; lemon can improve your mood; oranges and tangerines are known to energize.

Lighting one of our organic, soy candles will help you relax and release, create the atmosphere you desire, and take a moment for yourself.
